Getting Hosted:
"Unlimited Bandwidth?"
While unlimited
bandwidth is certainly attractive, it is unfortunately a marketting
gimmick.
Think of your electrical service. How much you pay your bills depend
on how much electricity you consume. Nothing is unlimited. If you could
get unlimited electricity, you could lay a few cables and set up your
own power service!
The same applies to bandwidth. If a webhost could offer unlimited bandwidth,
where do the webhost get the bandwidth from? Another unlimited bandwidth
provider? If so, that webhost will not be there for long because their
provider will not be.
Another situation
is when a webhost offers unlimited bandwidth with their in fact limited
resources. In such cases, the webhost is hoping that their clients will
not use as much bandwidth as they are able to offer, thus appearing
'unlimited'. The question is, what happens when their limit is reached?
As their clients' websites get more popular over time and consume more
bandwidth, are they able to continue offering unlimited bandwidth?
Only a few outcomes can happen. One, they cancel your account with the
excuse that you are 'monopolising their resources' or two, they send
you an email to tell you to pay more or move. Either way, you have to
go through the hassle of shifting your site or agree with their new
terms.
In summary,
always know exactly what you are paying for, so you know what exactly
what you will be getting.
